Doodle Generations Explained: F1, F1B, F2 and Multigen

Doodle generations explained simply: F1, F1B, F2, and multigen labels describe a dog’s breeding lineage. They can help you understand the parent breeds and whether a Poodle was introduced again through a backcross, but they do not guarantee an individual dog’s coat, shedding, temperament, size, or health.

A Doodle is generally a cross between a Poodle and another breed, such as a Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, or Bernese Mountain Dog. The letter-and-number labels are shorthand for generations within that breeding history.

What does F1 mean for a Doodle?

For a first-generation Doodle, one parent is a Poodle and the other is the second parent breed. A Doodle may also be backcrossed to one of its parent breeds, which is represented by the letter “B.”

Using a Goldendoodle as an example makes the labels easier to follow: the two foundation breeds are a Golden Retriever and a Poodle.

The foundation parents may be described as the P generation. A Golden Retriever crossed with a Poodle produces an F1 Goldendoodle. The label describes the cross, while the traits expressed by each puppy can still vary.

When two F1 Goldendoodles are bred, their puppies are commonly labeled F2. Later-generation labels such as F3 indicate additional Doodle-to-Doodle breeding. Terminology can vary among breeders, so ask for the actual parentage instead of relying on the label alone.

After several generations, breeders may use “multigenerational” or “multigen” for Doodle-to-Doodle pairings.

Coat type and shedding can vary within the same generation and even within the same litter. An F1, F1B, or multigen label should not be treated as a guarantee that a dog will have a particular coat or be suitable for someone with allergies.

What does the “B” mean in F1B?

The “B” means backcross. An F1 Doodle bred back to a Poodle is commonly labeled F1B. People often describe this as an approximate 75/25 ancestry ratio, but the label still does not predict exactly which traits an individual puppy will express.

In the Goldendoodle example, an F1 Goldendoodle crossed back to a Poodle is an F1B Goldendoodle. An F2 Doodle crossed back to a parent breed may be called F2B. Because naming conventions are not always used consistently, request a clear pedigree or explanation of the parent dogs.

The chart below provides a quick way to compare F1, F1B, F2, and later-generation relationships. Use it as a lineage guide, then ask the breeder for details about the specific pairing.

The same generation shorthand is used for Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, and other Poodle crosses. Research the breeder, ask for documented health testing and parentage, and do not rely on a generation label for allergy decisions. He will be yours, faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.”
